How do you download mods?

Post by UnderseaTree3 »

I know how to click a link and download the mod file onto my computer, but WHERE do I put the mod in my computer? I've seen like a long computer address shared on these forums for sending the mod file to, but when I do that the mod still does not seem to be added to the game. If someone could explain the process for installing mods or direct me to a tutorial, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. - I only have one mod installed, so far: an instant action mod. And the next mod I want to install is an unlimited unit mod. Just sharing if these details help.

Unfortunately, it isn't always that simple. It depends on how the mod you want to install is setup. For example, most multiplayer maps ask you to install them directly to the game's mp folder, while others may place them there automatically, along with other files, and only ask for the game's root directory.

All of my mods I can say are installed the same way: extract the mod's contents to your game's root directory.

What is the game's root directory? It is where the amrts.exe file is located. Again, this depends on how you have installed the game on your computer.

If you own the game on Steam, then it is easy to locate. Simply open the game in your steam library, click on the settings cog, select "Manage", then select "Browse local files". This will open the game's root directory in an explorer window.

If you've installed the game from some other service, or have installed the game from disc, then it becomes a bit trickier. You will have been prompted to install the game to a specific directory. If you don't remember it, you can try the default directories, being:

GoG:
C:\GOG Games\Army Men RTS\

Retail Disc:
C:\Program Files (x86)\3DO\Army Men RTS\

If the game is not located in either of these folders, there is one method you may try to find it. Locate the shortcut you use to launch the game, be that on your Desktop or your Start Menu. Right click on it, select "More", then select "Open file location".

This should take you to the amrts.exe file. If it takes you to a different place, for example this "Programs" folder, then simply follow the steps a second time.

Once you've found the root directory, try installing your mod there. If it doesn't work, you may need to place it in a specific subfolder. Look at the mod's download page to see if it specifies where you should place it, if not, try one of these common folders (note that you may need to create it if the folder does not exist).

Multiplayer maps
missions\mp\
mods\ruleset\
worlds\

Multiplayer computer AIs
mods\persona\

Global mods (Mods that affect all gameplay, such as unit limit mods)
base\

Interface mods
client\p\ingame\

Main Menu mods
client\p\shell\
I may not make the best maps, or be the best player, but I put a lot of time, effort, and care into my stuff. That counts for something, right? No.
